Resident blacksmith Vernon, shoes all the horses in the yard, he lives locally so he's the perfect man for the job and he's always around when we need him. He's worked as a farrier for most of his life and is highly skilled at his job.
Hailing from Sedgefield he went to Hereford farriers college were he did his diploma before he came to Middleham to do his apprenticeship with his uncle, who at the time was the farrier for most the yards in Middleham.
Vernon said one of his best achievements in racing was when he met is wife Jane.... they met at her fathers racing yard at Tupgill park, where she would hold the horses for the then young buck Vernon to shoe. I’m sure it wasn’t love at first sight as he spent most the time with his back to her haha.
Vern gets lots of satisfaction when a horse needs all the help it can get from the farrier, and even more so when it pays off!
He is very proud to have been the farrier of Kinnaird, she won a group one for Patrick Haslem trained in Middleham, and is known for the filly with the worst feet in racing. It gave Vernon a huge buzz to have got them right and for her to of gone on to win such a big race.
Vernon’s favourite horse is Kisumu, mainly because his wife would kill him if it wasn’t!!
In his spare time, Vern likes nothing better than going for a day or evening out at Ripon races.
