The Retriever has become somewhat of an all weather specialist, especially when it comes to Southwell, having finished in the first three in nine of his 18 starts, but on the turf after eight starts, he is still yet to place, although it could well be circumstance rather than a dislike of the green stuff which has held him back. A step back in trip to six furlongs at Hamilton last time didn't suit, but he still ran his usual game race, to go down by six and three quarter lengths.
The Retriever goes to post in the 1.15.pm, a 0-60 handicap, over the straight mile, with his regular jockey Aiden Brookes once again in the saddle, as they compete in a maximum field of 20 runners. Two runs ago at Southwell, The Retriever appeared to show much improved form to come home four and a half lengths clear, he runs here off only 1lb higher. His form on the all weather at Newcastle, and a couple of runs on a fast surface on turf in his younger days suggest he will probably handle this predicted good, good to firm surface.
