LUCOU. 03 May 2016. Axxos-Winnor. Owner-A Walsh, J Hill, S Toomes.
Lucou is a four year old French bred gelding, by the German Group 2 winner Axxos, a sire of National Hunt types. His Dam has had four racecourse representatives, including the three times winner, Winner Massagot, who recorded a best Racing Post Rating of 134. Lucou made his racecourse debut at Montauban, in France, in September 2016 for his trainer, and jockey J L Pelletan, racing as a two year old, on good ground, over an extended seven furlongs, in blinkers, he finished third of the seven runners. Three weeks later at Toulouse when stepped up to 10 furlongs, he could only manage sixth. In a further three appearances on the flat, through to December, he was third again, and unplaced on the final two occasions.
In January 2019 Lucou went juvenile hurdling, being highly tried at Pau, and Compiegne, before finishing third in calmer waters at Royan La Palmyre in April, he returned to the same venue eight days later, and this time improved a place, to finish second. His final race for the J L Pelletan yard was a sound forth at Auteuil, in April. Lucou raced once more in France, having been sold to race now from the yard of P Lenogue. At Compiegne in May he ran his best race to date, on very soft ground, to finish second, and earning his best Racing Post rating to date of 106.
Lucou was then sold, and sent to us, to continue his jumps career. It often takes ex French horses a while to acclimatise, and they usually arrive with inflated handicap marks. He made his stable debut at Market Rasen in August of last year, finishing sixth, beaten 11 lengths, with champion jockey Brian Hughes on board. He took a backward step at Cartmel three weeks later, and the decision to geld him was taken. At Wetherby in December, and again at Sedgefield in January 2020, he failed to get competitive, but in his first handicap at Newcastle in March from a mark of 99, he finished forth, beaten just over nine lengths. Lucou has raced on one more occasion, finishing four and a quarter lengths behind the winner, when finishing sixth at Wetherby, when racing from 3lb out of the weights. When Lucou arrived from France he had a rating of 121, and when he next races, he is eligible for 0-100.
