Ownership

Horseracing used to be known as “The Sport of Kings”, but such is its popularity in this modern era that it really could be better named as “The Sport of the People”.

More and more people are going racing (record post war attendances in recent years) and / or having a bet on it. Racing has touched the lives of all sorts of people, whether they simply enjoy a corporate or family day out or, increasingly, want to own a horse or a “leg”.

The sheer beauty, grace and breathlessness of thoroughbred horses giving their all for glory captures the hearts of many. The reaction to the deaths of so-called “public” horses such as Desert Orchid and Best Mate demonstrates the affection the British public has for horseracing.

That love and passion drives an ever-increasing number of people to get involved in racehorse ownership, be it simply to own a racehorse for a day for a corporate event or a family birthday, to own a small share in a racehorse as part of a partnership or to own a racehorse outright. The thrill of seeing your horse run in your colours, the involvement of seeing your horse in training on the gallops, listening to the views of the trainer and jockey, being involved in planning your horse’s race programme and, hopefully, collecting trophies an d prize money! More and more people can afford ways to get involved now – it doesn’t have to be a dream.

At Micky Hammond Racing, we need owners for our business to survive and flourish. Without owners, we are nothing, and the whole of our team recognises that. We also understand that people looking to get involved are often able to afford some level of financial involvement but are “time-poor” due to their work and personal commitments. We work hard to make sure you get 100% entertainment value from your hard-earned “escape time”.

The pages in our Ownership section aim to give you all of the basic information you need about different types ownership, how to get involved, how to buy your horse and what the costs are. Please use the top navigation bar, or the links below.

Why Micky Hammond Racing?

For more information on what it’s like to be involved in ownership, please visit our section on Making The Most Of Your Ownership or Why Micky Hammond Racing. Alternatively, please visit the British Horseracing Board’s site welcometoracehorseownership.co.uk.

We strongly advise people not to get involved with racehorse ownership as a financial investment. Whilst owners can and do make a profit from their involvement, the majority do not as the average return on costs for a UK owner is about 30%. So your involvement is for your pleasure (though you can sometimes make a few quid from successful betting on your horse!).
